5 Actionable Tips to Build a Meaningful LinkedIn Network

Does size really matter - or is it just vanity over sanity?
Why do I ask?
A few months back, I was approached by someone asking for help to increase their LinkedIn connections and followers.
When I asked the reason why, they replied:
"More connections means more business and quick wins."
Oh…
This response highlights a common misconception.
Many people still believe that having a larger number of connections and followers on social media will automatically lead to more business and quick wins.
However, this is a myth…
Effective marketing is about growing and nurturing relationships that could (and hopefully will) turn into customers.
Cultivating an influential network with a strategic plan that genuinely converts into business results.
Sure, some may argue that more connections mean you have the opportunity to widen your reach and get under the nose of more prospects.
However, the reality is that having thousands of connections and followers might look impressive, but how do you intend to engage meaningfully with all of them?
Without genuine interaction, those connections are just numbers…
Vanity over sanity!
Here’s the reality:
> Quality over quantity:
It's not about the number of connections but the quality of those relationships.
Engage with your network authentically to build trust and value.
> Nurture relationships:
Focus on growing and nurturing relationships.
Regular, meaningful interactions can turn connections into loyal customers.
> Add value:
Share valuable content and insights that benefit your network.
This positions you as a thought leader and attracts genuine interest.
> Cull your network:
May sound a bit drastic, but...
Don’t be afraid to cut back on connections that don’t add value to your feed or constantly try to sell you something.
Keep your network relevant and engaged.
How to get started:
If this resonates with you but you’re not sure where to begin, here are a 5 actionable steps:
1. Audit your current network
Take a good look at your existing connections.
- Who aligns with your goals and values?
- Who engages with your content?
- Identify key relationships to nurture and trim the rest.
2. Personalise connection requests
When connecting with new people, send a message explaining why you’d like to connect.
Make it about them, not you.
3. Start small
Pick 5–10 connections to engage with each week. Like, comment on, or share their posts, and send them thoughtful messages.
Consistency is key!
4. Create value-driven content
Share posts that solve a problem, provide insights, or spark conversations.
Think about what your audience needs, not what you want to sell.
5. Be patient and intentional
Building meaningful relationships takes time.
Focus on depth over speed.
Marketing success on social media isn’t measured by the size of your network but by the strength and authenticity of your connections.
Maybe it’s time to shift our focus from vanity metrics to building meaningful relationships that drive real business results.
